TA EAST NEWS 14th SEPTEMBER 2010
To TA East Members & Friends
From Ferg Muir
We have two dates almost upon us:
The TA EAST AGM is this Sunday, 19th September, and even before that, we meet on Friday (17th) when the Tour of Britain crosses Suffolk
Apologies for not getting details of plans for Friday out sooner – I have been away at the Stan Spelling/Jenny Noad weekend, then gathered local news, got my EDP piece in and finally worked out and sent my stuff for the Autumn TA Gazette – it was Gazette press-day yesterday,
So – FRIDAY(17th)
I suggest we meet for coffee at the new cafe at BRIDGE STREET on the A134 Bury to Sudbury road. It is the former Rose & Crown pub and is very well spoken of.
The location is perfect for arriving by bike: either from the east, down the hill from Lavenham – or west, along the lane from Shimpling.
We will need to LEAVE about 10:30am in order to ride to FOXEARTH on the B1064 where the first King of the Mountains sprint is scheduled for 11.21am . We will then ride through the lanes to the foot of Ballingdon Hill – or the top, if the road is still open. The tour is due to climb Ballingdon Hill on the A131 just south of Sudbury at around 12.10pm, the vrace having covered 39 km in the meantime.
After all the excitement is over we, or at least I, will look for some lunch. I have Edwardstone White Horse in mind for this.
So to SUNDAY (19th)
The East 50 has only attracted two solo trikes – though one is a very fast one – Carl Saint hoping to do a 1:57 in order to achieve the fastest-ever Trike BAR speed.
Anyhow, with only two entries the trikes are integrated with the bicycles in the CC Breckland 50. Peter Holland is off at 0702 and Carl at 0758. Then at 0803 the last starters of all are Peter Hopkins and Ray Legg on Pete’s tandem trike.
The headquarters for the 50 and the venue for the
Is Morley Village Hall, Golf Links Road NR18 9SU
Morley is between Attleborough and Wymondham.
Golf Links Road is a turning off the old A11, which here runs parallel to and just north of the A11 dual carriageway. The north end of Golf Links Road leads towards Morley St Botolph and the Buck Inn. The extensive buildings of Wymondham College are also on Golf Links Road, so you will not go far wrong if you follow signs to the school.
Martin Badham, the Chairman, has decreed that the AGM will start at 12 NOON, so there will be plenty of time for those coming from away. Those already there for the 50 need to be prepared for a bit of a hiatus between the two events.
The Chairman, incidentally, sounded quite perky when he phoned me from his home a few hours ago, having had his first cataract operation at Cromer Hospital on Tuesday. All appears to be going well.
Also within the last few hours Ralph Dadswell and Paul Mace successfully completed their attack on the Pembroke-London tandem trike RRA record. They had just SEVEN minutes to spare over the record set by Pat Kenny and John Taylor – the latter the author of the recent histories of the End-to-End records and 24 hour time trials.
I mentioned getting stuff off to the TA Gazette. This includes the East Programme for the rest of the year, which is as follows:
Sat 23rd Elevenses at the Forge Tearooms, Thornham Walks. Grid ref TM100715, Postcode approx IP23 8HH, 6 miles south of Diss, just west of A140.
Lunch – Billingford Horseshoes Grid Ref TM 166787, postcode IP21 4HL. The Horseshoes is on the A143 Diss to Harleston road, just over a mile east of Scole.
Thurs 11th Lunchtime meet at the Axe & Compasses, Aythorpe Roding (B184)
(This is to explore the valley of the River Roding. Recommendations for a coffee stop in or near Chipping Ongar would be very useful)
Sun 12th Lunchtime meet at Old Cannon Brewery, 86 Cannon, St Bury St Edmunds
Best wishes to you all
