TA EAST E-NEWS JULY 2nd 2016

To TA East members and friends

From Ferg Muir

There are quite a few points to cover – and it is getting near bedtime – so here goes:

Reminder – as listed on p51 of the Spring TA Gazette:

The next TA EAST MEET is an evening meet at The BUTT & OYSTER, PIN MILL near Ipswich

this coming THURSDAY 7TH JULY, from about 7pm onwards.

This venue is particularly appropriate at the moment as The East Angles theatre company are currently performing a stage version of Arthur Ransome’s WE DIDN’T MEAN TO GO TO SEA at the Hush House at the former RAF Bentwaters near Ipswich.

The 1937 novel – to my mind the best Ransome wrote – begins and ends at Pin Mill. The opening page describes :

“…this happy place where almost everybody wore sea-boots, and land, in comparison with water, seemed hardly to matter at all”

To find PIN MILL go to Chelmondiston village on the B1456, about 6 mls SE of Ipswich. There turn north to drop down to the waterside hamlet of Pin Mill.

Grid ref is TM205380 Postcode: IP9 1JW

END-to-END MIXED-CREW TANDEM TRIKE RECORD ATTEMPT

GOOD LUCK AND BEST WISHES to Mark Brooking and Jane Moore who leave Land’s End at 3am on Monday 11th July, to attempt to set this record – they need to be at John ‘O Groats by Thursday morning to beat the Road Records Association Standard.

For those not directly involved, but who would like to keep track of Mark and Jane’s progress, the TA Website will be the place to look for updates on their progress.

BEST WISHES TO OUR WALKING WOUNDED…..

MICK HENIGHAN is convalescing in Norfolk at the moment.

I understand that he wishes it to be clearly understood that he did NOT fall off his tricycle.

He maintains he was still neatly astride it when it rolled.

I am thin on details at the moment, but a bridge, a corner and a car coming the other way – this last not so common in Co. Mayo as in Norfolk, I believe – were all involved.

MARTIN BADHAM has suffered a detached retina in his left eye. As this problem was the cause of my Mother losing her sight in one eye, this was a bit of a shock to me.

However, medicine has progressed a lot in the intervening 50 years, so fingers crossed.

Martin will not be able to drive for 6 weeks and is also off cycling at the moment.
