TA EAST NEWS 30TH April 2010
To TA East Members & Friends
From Ferg Muir
If you are thinking of entering the TA East 25 on the Bungay bypass on Sunday 16th May, this is just the right moment because with this coming Monday a bank holiday, entries need to be catching the post.
Here are the basic details :
The East 25 0700 B25/50 Wortwell. Entries £7.00 to Mike Moody 7 Birch Grove, Elm, Wisbech, PE14 0AP (Tel 01945 861046)
Strictly speaking entries close 6pm on Tuesday (4th May).
If you are a bit confused because you know we have an East 25 at Sleaford on Saturday 1st May – which will be “today” by the time most of you read this – and it seems odd to have another 15 days later, there is a reason.
The Sleaford 25 is linked to the Lincolnshire weekend run by Pete and Gwyneth Holland over the Mayday holiday.
The 16th May event is our Summer 25 with the Wolsey Road Club, which has been displaced from its July date because the East District of Cycling Time Trials is running the national championship 100 (for bicycles) then.
Anyway the May 16th event is on quite a decent course – the single carriageway but smooth and fairly flat – much of it is a former railway track – A143 Harleston to Bungay road. The riders go up and down this road twice, starting near Redenhall Church and turning at the “Chicken” roundabout at Bungay, the A143/B1332 junction. There is a good spectator spot where steps lead down from the HQ, Wortwell Community Hall, to the bypass below.
If you are not specially interested in racing, then come along around 10 to 10.15am and join in our SOCIAL RIDE ALONG THE WAVENEY VALLEY to STRADBROKE QUEEN’S HEAD
The Low Road along the Waveney Valley should be in its early summer glory by then.
The Queen’s Head looked after us very well last year, but they were a bit daunted by our group dropping in on them unbooked, so please let me know if you intend to be with us.

Wortwell Community Centre is Grid Ref TM 276850. It lies between the old main road and the A143 bypass at Wortwell. The Queen’s Head, is on the B1118 leading north out of Stradbroke.
Looking a bit further ahead, there looks like being quite a large East Region contingent at the Bruce Kingsford Weekend at Astley near Shrewsbury 29/30/31 May, with some being mad enough to enter both the TA 50 and the classic Anfield 100 next day, and others more attracted by the clubrun in the Wem area on Saturday morning.
Beyond that on Friday June 4th the East meet for an evening drink by the river at Pin Mill, near Ipswich.
Just two weeks on from that some of us will be journeying to the lusher countryside of Somerset for the weekend 19th/20th June, for some exploration fitted around the TA Criterium Championship at Ilton. It would be good to get a good gathering of East members there – and my goodness the country does look interesting.
(Yes – 19/20th is York Rally Weekend as well, but these clashes can’t always be avoided).
Looking back we were blest with a sunny day for our Friday visit to Edwardstone.
For an account of the day and pictures:
Commiserations to Andrew and Jane Pattle who set out on their tandem trike to join us but retreated in the face of repeated punctures.
Commiserations also to Martin Badham whose plan to initiate his new Trykit tricycle with this social ride followed by a time trial followed by an Audax were halted, not so much by a puncture, but by breaking a plastic tyre lever when fixing it. He had to walk back towards the time trial HQ in bare feet (because his racing shoes weren’t made for walking) and that left his soles too sore to contemplate riding the Audax.
Congratulations, however to Adrian Perkin who was third overall in the Veterans Time Trial Association 10 at Thurston, doing 26:05 on his tricycle, beating the standard for his age by 8:17 and leading the Godric team (including TA member John Dupen) to the team prize
Hoping to see many of you at the Sleaford/Dunston weekend, at Wortwell or Stradbroke or at one of the other days mentioned
Best Wishes to you all
