TA EAST NEWS SEPTEMBER 1ST 2011
To TA East Members & Friends
EAST AGM Reminder
As mentioned in my Around the Regions piece in the Summer Gazette, we have the regional AGM coming up. It will be after the TA East and CC Breckland 50 on Sunday 18th September at Morley Village Hall, Golf Links Road, Grid ref TM 074977, anticipated start time around noon.
Morley Village Hall is between Attleborough and Wymondham, on the NW side of both the new and old A11.
RAY LEGG
Sadly we also have the funeral of Ray Legg.
Monday 5th September at 12.45pm at the West Suffolk Crematorium, Risby near Bury St Edmunds IP28 6RR. Cyclists are urged to come on bikes and in cycling gear, parking at Risby Village Hall.
I would be glad to hear memories of Ray.
Meanwhile, here is what I wrote for the EDP:
The death of Thetford cyclist Ray Legg at the age of 65 has robbed the East Anglian cycling scene of one of its best-known characters. Ray Legg knew everyone in time trialling, had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the sport and was never happier than when talking about it. He liked to ride every day, mile on mile, and, having just retired, was looking forward to doing just that.
He was never fast in terms of speed and preferred the longer distances. My first record of him in competition was aged 22 in the 1968 West Suffolk Wheelers 12-Hour in which he covered 220 miles riding for his south London club, the Sorian RC. The last event he rode was a week before his death- the CC Breckland 12-Hour. He did 189 miles, achieving a dearly-held ambition – a Veterans TTA Plaque for beating the standard for his age by an improved margin in one year at all four main distances.
Ray came to live in Norfolk in the early 1970s. He was found collapsed in the kitchen of his home in Thetford, having suffered a severe stroke. Characteristically, he was surrounded by equipment he had been assembling in order to help a friend in the Eastern Counties 12-Hour that day.
After that our next meet is a happier one:
SAT 17TH Bury St Edmunds to see Tour of Britain start. Lunch afterwards at Flempton Greyhound IP28 6EL, Grid Ref TL813 699,
Now I must fly – appropriately to the FLYING GATE meet of those peculiar machines at Stowmarket
