TA EAST NEWS 6th JANUARY 2012

To TA East members and friends
From Ferg Muir

A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

Our next meet is on SUNDAY 15th JANUARY and will be at lunchtime at
THE HORSESHOES, Billingford near DIss, with morning coffee at
GOODIES FARM SHOP near Long Stratton

Billingford Horseshoes is on the A143 Diss to Harleston road, about a mile east of Scole. It is an unpretentious pub, where we usually sit in a corner bar with a view of Billingford windmill out of the window. Excellent beer comes straight from the barrel in a cool room.

Goodies is a well-known cycling club stop although this is a first time for a TA East run.

It is marked “French’s Farm” on OS maps and is two miles due north of Pulham Market. The grid ref is TM 196896. Fairly flat ride to Billingford – passing near the site of the Pulham Airship Station – where the R34 finished it’s double crossing of the Atlantic in July 1919.

More detailed directions at the end of this newsletter

Please accept my apologies for not settling this venue earlier. I have a bit of an excuse in that Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival was “in the air” as the destination for a long time before the proposer finally decided that it was not practicable this year. But no doubt I should have had a “plan B” all prepared.

It is not necessary to book at the Horseshoes, but Fiona, the landlady, would like me to give an idea of our numbers – so please tell me if you expect to be coming – by 6pm Thursday. 01603 615000.

Our Chairman, Martin Badham who had to miss the meet at The Viper having ricked his back falling off, made a steady but rather slow recovery until he fortunately fell off again. Fortunately because he fell on the other side – I forget the exact circumstances – but this seems to have knocked him straight and thereafter he quickly got better. He is off to Oxford this weekend to ride The Poor Student 200km Audax, so must be recovered.

Seven of us met at Great Bricett on a dry but somewhat grey day. The Veggie Lion was certainly comfortable and welcoming, but perhaps expectations had been raised too much by their website – my meal was quite OK, but unmemorable – and the vegetables were only barely enough. So glad of the biscuits chez Pattle afterwards!

The issue of the VTTA REVIEW OF STANDARDS was raised in TA East News on the 9th November. Those interested should look at the TA Website where John Thompson and Martin Badham have an article and a request for information on differentials between tricycle and bicycle time trial times.

The sad news of the death of DOROTHY TUFFNELL is also reported there. Dorothy was a regular at the TA East lunch for many years. She was a founder member of the Women’s TA in 1954 and later National Secretary and President of the TA.

A tricyclist through and through.

THE TA EAST LUNCH now just four weeks away on Sunday 6th Feb – please book to Martin Badham 01603 897738 9 St Pauls Close, Horsford, NORWICH NR10 3HG martin.badham@talktalk.net ( I guess he will be back from Oxford on Sunday).

Cost is a bargain £12 per person.

Venue : The Manger, Bradfield Combust.

Bradfield Combust is on the A134, 6 miles south of Bury St Edmunds.

OS Sheet 155. Grid ref TL893574. Postcode IP30 0LW

Chairman’s Appetiser Run: Meet for coffee at 10:30am in “Sweetmeats” Water Street, Lavenham

BILLINGFORD “HORSESHOES”

Grid Ref is TM 166787, postcode IP21 4HL. The Horseshoes is on the A143 Diss to Harleston road, just over a mile east of Scole.

Do beware that there are two Billingfords in Norfolk, and this is the smaller one and is very close to the border with Suffolk.

If you are driving to the area, there are car parks in Mount Street, Diss (GR 118806) or at the railway station. Or there are lay-bys on the A143, both west and a quarter of a mile east of the Horseshoes.

GOODIES –(French’s Fm) is on the lane from the A140 to Coles Green. I don’t recommend cycling on the A140, which is the main road from Ipswich to Norwich, dead straight and not much wider than when the Romans built it. Best approach Goodies from Morningthorpe or one of the Pulhams.

(Note that buses are replacing trains on the Ipswich-Diss-Norwich route that day.

Hope to meet you during the day
