To TA East members and friends

From Ferg Muir

Mike Keen, aided and abetted by Frida, has done a wonderful job planning our forthcoming weekend. Here is his plan:

TA WEEKEND, 2/3/4 MARCH 2012
Grid Ref: TL 532237 (note difference from last TA news).
Along track at bottom of Ash PH car park
COSTS: £3.50 per night. This covers tea, coffee, milk and condiments.

PLEASE BRING: Wine and Beer for dinner (We’re not sure if anyone drinks, or what, so please bring your own.
A full or inner, sleeping bag and pillow-case. Pyjama’s, toiletries and a towel.
There are pillows and some blankets at the Hut.
BREAKFASTS: Bring your own eggs/bacon/cereal. Michael will organise, with help, a cook-up.

FURTHER INFO: The Hut is fully stocked with china, cutlery, soap and tea-towels. Any twitchers can borrow binoculars. There are some hand-towels available for those tri-cycling
to the Hut. WE DO NOT HAVE A SHOWER, so any Audaxers will be advised to wash down at the Shaftesbury HQ.
Although the Hut is powered by gas, we do have a Flush Loo in the building. This is a great convenience. Especially for the Ladies.
( Gentlemen still use the field, if possible).

FRIDAY: Frida will be at the Hut from about 4pm, and will help organise the fish & chip Take-Away.

Michael and Ian will be there earlier, to get the fires going and will re-appear at The Ash round about 9pm.

SATURDAY RUN: For those who may come out for the day, there will be a welcoming Brew-up at the Hut between 9:30 and 10am.
Elevenses at the Prince of Wales,Green Tye,and lunch at the Nags Head, Little Hadham.
We expect to return to the Hut between 3pm and 5pm, depending on the route. Ian Taylor will be going straight back to the Hut after Lunch, so the kettles will be on in good time for Tea and Cake
DINNER on Saturday evening will be Spaghetti Bolognaise, at about £5.00 and includes bread and butter.
Frida will do a VEGGIE VERSION if required.

SUNDAY: Depart Hut at about 10:30, after breakfast, tea and washing-up.
Then a leisurely 9 mile ride via Elsenham, Henham and Sucksted Green to The Three Horseshoes at DUTON HILL. TL604268.
Pause for a breather (it’s at the top of a climb) and a pint. About 12noon Then move on to….
LUNCH will be at The Swan, GREAT EASTON . TL605255, at about 12:30pm. Their Sunday menu is a roast, about £9.00, ‘though they will do baguettes or ploughmans.
THE LANDLORD HAS ASKED THAT WE GIVE APPROXIMATE NUMBERS, so if you are going to join us for lunch, let Fergus know.
It’s then about an 8 mile ride back to the Hut. Those in training may do a longer route. We won’t be rushing away from the Hut ’till the evening.

Members are welcome to come for one or both days, or to meet up with us for a day. Basically it is bookings to Ferg Muir (details below); queries to Mike Keen (details above)

Martin Badham’s first East Lunch as organiser went off really well.
Can’t say everything as I’m conscious that I must save stuff for a report in
the spring TA Gazette, but I can answer the most obvious question – How many made it through the snow? The answer is 22.
That’s out of 33 booked.
Being online – have a look at the East Gallery of the TA Website there are seven photos taken on the day.
The depth of the snow was around five inches.
We left for our journeys home a bit before dusk, which is unusual. But otherwise things went very much as we are accustomed
Cross-toasting was good. The road from the Chairman’s Appetizer meet at Lavenham was almost free of traffic. People riding from a substantial distance away included new member Peter Faulks from Gt Maplestead, Mick Madgett, Dave Cannon and Andrew Pattle.

I (FRM) have just returned from East Member Ken Usher’s funeral. I am putting together more about his life and achievements. There is a little more detail on the TA website, where sadly there is another death reported – that of BOB FOTHERINGHAM from our neighbouring region – the North-East.
Bob often came to the East Lunch and was fond of racing in our Region – notably in the TA East 12 Hour.

Several TA members took part in this Bedford to the Cotswolds and back Audax, including Geoff Booker and TA East members Jane Swain and Martin Badham. Martin’s account of his ride can be read on the CC Breckland website at (as usual with TA East News, you may have to copy and paste this into an address box to find the item). Martin had covered 149 miles by the time he returned to base.
(Webmaster’s moment of pedancy – On looking at the ride in retrospect it was actually 147.31 miles)

Hoping to see many of you sometime during the weekend based at the Lea Valley Hut. What a promising looking programme Mike Keen has put together!
Do come.
Best wishes to you all.
