TA EAST E-NEWS JULY 24TH  2018

To TA East members & friends

From Ferg Muir

There are two things to particularly draw to your attention in this edition:

**** We have a SOCIAL MEET THIS SATURDAY (28TH JULY) at STOKE ASH in north Suffolk.

**** That at our EAST REGION AGM ON SATURDAY 11TH AUGUST WE HAVE SOME IMPORTANT MATTERS TO DEAL WITH

This Saturday (28th July) we will lunch at

STOKE ASH WHITE HORSE. This inn has been suggested by several members as a good venue  and is six miles south of Diss, at the cross-roads where the Finningham-Thorndon unclassified road crosses the A140. The postcode is IP23 7ET and the National Grid Ref TM112709.

For those who would like to meet for coffee and ride to Lunch, I suggest we gather at the Osiers Cafe at the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket, with our core time there being 10.45 – 11.10 am. This is near the ASDA supermarket and can be approached from either the MARKET PLACE or ILLIFF ROAD.

AT the EAST REGION AGM (Full details of venue below) we have to appoint officials for the year – and, sadly, WE HAVE LOST OUR SECRETARY who has dropped out of TA membership.

Looking at ways of tackling this problem, MARTIN BADHAM has suggested that, as he is already doing a good deal in his positions as Treasurer and Racing Secretary, he would be willing to consolidate all into one Secretary/Treasurer/Racing Secretary post………BUT ONLY IF SOMEONE CAN BE FOUND TO TAKE ON HIS PRESENT POSITION AS CHAIRMAN.

So there we have it – we have been looking around ….but…… Martin, as current Chairman,  would like to hear from any member who feels they could take on the challenge of taking the chair of the TA East.

Contact Martin on 01603 897738 or martin.badham@talktalk.net

THAT LEAVES THE CAPTAINCY  – the organiser of social meets and runs.

I announced last year that this would be my last (and 31st) year in the job.

Given the changes that have been forced on us at the top, I have agreed to be willing to continue one more year, if necessary.

BUT… it would be better if a replacement – or two replacements – would come forward to take us forward – if you see what I mean. This is particularly so as the railway is unlikely to carry my trike beyond proposed changes in the autumn – so you could end up being led astray by a bloke on a folding bike.

(The captaincy can be kept separate from the editorship of TA East News)

Talk to Martin or me (contact details at the end) about this one.

I’m pleased to say that one piece of confusion has been resolved.

The name “Ben Elliott” appeared amongst those for whom subscriptions to last weekend Mersey Roads 24 Hour had been made “In memory of…..”

TA NE member Jim Lawley asked me at the 24 if this could possibly be our friend and former trike 100 mile trike competition record holder, grass track champion, son of Richard and brought up at Over Peover.

IT IS NOT

I rang “our” Ben’s mum Celia Elliott and was assured that her Ben is very much alive and will be attending Mildenhall Rally complete with a new addition to his family.

Apparently the “Ben Elliott” who has long been a subscriber to the 24 was a completely different person ….. who has sadly died during the past year.

Just one other point:-

“THE HEDGEHOG IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE HIPPOPOTAMUS”

I could not help overhearing this ear-catching statement as I breakfasted under a tree on the terrace of The Glasshouse, a J D Wetherspoons pub near my home here in Norwich.

I had already briefly chatted to the speaker who – long time ago –  had been a rider with the CTC Norfolk DA….and I knew he wasn’t bonkers.

He had returned to his conversation and I to perusing the Eastern Daily Press when this piece of enlightenment drifted across the air between our tables.

When my acquaintance went off to get another round, I asked his companion what on earth this statement referred to. It turns out both terms are names for opening moves in tournament-standard chess
