New members Nikos Kassapakisand his cousin Nikolas Koumpenakis, riding their Duratec tandem fitted with the tandem version of the tricycle conversion built in Nikolas’ firm in Greece, were the only long barrow to ride the Lewes Wanderers 30 mile tt on Sunday 20th May. They completed the course in 2:04:52, making them eligible for the South Eastern Invicta Trophies, to be presented at the South Eastern Luncheon on November 25th. Also riding on three wheels was Mark Vowells, finishing with 1:20:09. The weather was cool for the event with mist, which burned off by lunchtime for a warm afternoon.
The trike conversion attracted much attention at the event, the solid construction belied its light weight, being made of aluminium. A novel way of attaching the upper part to the bike frame is by bolting it to the brake bridge. It incorporates a double freewheel and rear disc brake, with holes for attaching a guard bar for use in UCI Paralympic events. Details will be posted on the Links page, apparently British Cycling has taken delivery of one.
